Success Stories - Samantha
Impact Northwest’s Parent Child Development Services (PCDS) program is making a difference to hundreds of households across Portland. Many parents who enroll their children in PCDS are quite vulnerable. Samantha was just that. She is a single mother of 3 and was supporting her kids on welfare. She suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression, which can make day to day life very difficult, even under the best of conditions.
Samantha did a lot of self reflection while she was in the program which helped her understand how her interactions with her daughters were affecting their development. She realized that she needed to reevaluate her expectations of her children and soften her manner with them.
Samantha is now employed. She works the graveyard shift so she can spend time with her kids and also provide for them. The most exciting news is that Samantha is in school and says she is studying to be a social worker! Congratulations and good luck Samantha!
PCDS employs a Strengths Based Approach when working with clients. This means that staff members help the client identify his or her skills and strengths and use those skills and strengths. A powerful testament to this approach came in the form of a letter that Samantha wrote to her PCDS educator:
“I just wanted to let you know how much it meant to me that you were so caring and non-judgmental… You advised me with complete respect, understanding and you weren’t judgmental or criticizing. I had a very positive experience and was always able to learn very valuable parenting techniques.”
Samantha is one of the 60,000 low-income children, youth, families, adults with disabilities, and seniors we serve on a yearly basis. Through her own hard work and the Community of Support provided by Impact Northwest and partner agencies, Samantha is achieving success for herself and her children.
